“As the weightless economy takes off in the world and in North East England, we are seeing some great results from Codeworks, the digital media technology Centre of Excellence. I wish them every success in the future.”
Paul Callaghan, Chairman, Leighton GroupOne of Codeworks' key aims is to translate innovation into new highly scalable new business start-ups, using our internal expertise and links within North East England to take them all the way through from concept stage to the marketplace.
To date, Codeworks has spun out four companies in the digital media technology area. These are:
AiDEPT is in the process of developing the world's most advanced interactive exercise prescription software. The company's aim is to help people who are willing to exercise but who are currently under-active to easily and painlessly enjoy the many benefits of physical fitness.
AiDEPT is working with Teesside University to create and exercise experience that combines the fun of videogaming with a gently progressive level of cardiovascular workout, tailored to the individual's own capacity.
Get-Me TV has created a system that combines Internet and mobile phone technology and could revolutionise the way outside broadcasts are conducted.
The company has developed a mechanism that drastically reduces the cost of gathering outside broadcast footage using an innovative system of IP cameras, broadband technology and mobile phones.
Outside broadcasts are usually hugely expensive and require large teams of people in order to produce. Get-Me TV's system eliminates the need for these large teams and expense – meaning that the market for its product is potentially huge.
N-CODE (Northern Centre of Digitisation and Encoding) is a pilot project that is seeking to establish North East England as a specialist centre for digital archiving.
The pilot has been launched to potentially fill a large gap in the digitisation market. The BBC estimates there are 250 million hours of analogue audiovisual content in archives around the world, which could be digitally converted. Despite this tremendous economic and cultural opportunity, no region or company has emerged to deliver the solutions or capability to meet the challenge.
N-CODE will establish a platform enabling Codeworks and North East England to attract major archives into partnership, and to develop cutting-edge content digitisation platforms and processes.
VideoJuicer is a Web video broadcasting platform for media companies and content producers.
Aimed primarily at the entertainment and sports markets, websites created using VideoJuicerÂ’s fully hosted service will use 'gurus' (well-known experts in their field) to supply high quality content that viewers will respect, trust and enjoy.
A typical VideoJuicer website will offer a blend of content from three distinct groups: members/users, website owners and the gurus.
VideoJuicer is currently working with a number of partners in television, sports and music. The company's revenue will come from service fees and a percentage of the advertising generated by each individual site.
